G. Kwame Scruggs holds a Masters of
Arts degree in Mythological Studies with degree specialization
in Jungian Depth Psychology from Pacifica Graduate Institute in
Santa Barbara, California. At Pacifica he had the rare and privileged
opportunity to study under internationally renowned scholars in
their respective fields. Kwame also holds a Masters of Science
degree in Technical Education with an emphasis in Guidance and
Counseling from The University of Akron. He also completed the
required course work for a Masters in Community Counseling while
at the university. He is actively participating in ongoing continuing
education through The CG Jung Center of Analytical Psychology of
New York and is presently enrolled in the Ph.D. program at Pacifica
Graduate Institute.
Kwame was formally initiated into the Akan System of Life Cycle
Development (rites of passage) in May of 1993.
Kwame has conducted support groups with
Akron Public Schools, adolescent youth and male high school "drop-outs" in
Akron and Cleveland, Ohio and facilitated numerous staff in-services
in Akron, Cleveland and Cincinnati Charter Schools. Previously
he spent five years as a Staff Counselor for the University of
Akron's Academic Achievement Program assisting students in their
transitions through middle, high school and college. There he also
coordinated and conducted parent and student workshops, facilitated
support groups along with teaching classes in Mythological Studies
and Knowledge of Self to seventh and eleventh grade students respectively.
Kwame has presented at local, state and national conferences. In
all of the above he employs mythological stories, drumming, counseling
techniques, and concepts of rites of passage as a means of healing
past, present, and possible future psychological wounds.
