AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS

  ACADEMIC ENRICHMENT AND SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT

Our Academic and Social Development Program operates four days a week. Each session is two hours long. The initial hour is one of transition where snacks are served and the students mingle. Two days of the week during this initial period the students begin their homework assignments. The other two days they drum to the beat of African rhythms. The remaining time is devoted to program instruction. Each student is provided with leather-bound journals, supplies, t-shirts and other learning incentives.

Our after-school program is unique because of its comprehensive program design, competent, highly-trained staff and our collaboration with the community we serve. Our Academic Facilitators all have Master’s Degrees in their academic specialty which they share with our students in their own unique and proven style. Our support staff are all selected specifically for their years of experience working with people who live and work in an urban population and community.

SUPPORT GROUPS: VIEWING LIFE THROUGH MYTHS

Our support groups are designed around the telling, discussion and interpretation of mythological stories and fairy tales accompanied by the soothing beat of traditional drums to teach the student how to view their life’s story through the objective lens of mythology and fairy tales. Participants uncover common mythological motifs such as sacrifice, trials, conflict resolution, decision-making, perseverance, humility, confidence and strength.

Through these stories students will discover common themes and basic patterns of development. Through the characters and their common experiences the students are provided with interpretations designed to increase their critical thinking skills. Drumming is an ancient technique that facilitates communication, creates community and provides safety. Through these discussions our students begin to see the importance of these mythological characteristics and how they relate to their academic achievements, social development and lifelong success.

WRITING

Our Writing workshop is a journey of self-exploration, discovery and transformation where each student examines through their writing who they are now and who they want to become as a mature, contributing adult. Through writing and the critical study of relevant films, screenplays, music, poetry and novels, our students learn about responsibility, their true selves, and the consequences of the decisions they make today.

SEXUALITY

Our Sexuality Program promotes a Reality-Based approach to sexual relations. We combine Abstinence-Based and Contraceptive-Based education into a program that is designed to provide young men and women with accurate information in a format that honors the reality of their lives. Abstinence-Base sexual education promotes the advantages of not having sex, and encourages adolescents and teaches them strategies they can use to abstain. Contraceptive-Based sex education promotes the use of contraceptives.

Gerald McDermottInherent in our Reality-Based approach is the belief that everyone is a sexual being and everyone should have access to information that will: increase their knowledge and use of contraceptives; improve their ability to abstain; change their attitude towards future sexual encounters; reduce the effects of peer pressure; and encourage the use of this knowledge to prevent unwanted pregnancies.

Conducted by Curtis Williams, M.S. Social Work, University of Akron
